One thing that really bugs me about the United States is the state of our political system. Now, I’m not going to go off on some trite old rampage about how dumb and two-faced our political candidates are. No, the fact that our government consists of shady, calculating idiots is no surprise to me (in fact, that’s what “politics” basically is, right?)
I don’t care how little character our leaders have at the moment. Ordinarily, I would, but at this point in time, these facts come as no surprise to me and don’t even make me blink.
What bothers me is why it is that most of our leaders have no character.
It’s because of how dumb we are–the people who elect these leaders. We elect the same candidates back into power, again and again. And when headlines flash across our TV screens, saying that some Senator was involved in some scandal, we’re shocked and surprised–almost as though a close relative were involved or something.
I think it’s about time that we stop getting suckered into voting for these idiots after they lure us in with the same old rhetoric and broad generalities. Yeah, we want “change”. What kind of change? Nah, we don’t know. But it sounds good, and that’s all that matters. 1
When we think of “Politics”, we always think of empty suits–people who make tons of promises, but as soon as they’re elected, nothing is fulfilled. We then go on with our daily lives once these candidates are elected, and the so-called “promises” are soon forgotten and are rarely brought up again. And after we have all this background info on the nature of politics, don’t you think we’d be a little wiser by the time election day rolls around? Unfortunately, this just isn't the case.
Back onto subject, I think that in order to avoid all these problems, we ought to be more careful when choosing who we want leading our government. This goes for both sides of the aisle–Republicans and Democrats. Both sides have their fair share of scandals, and in most of these instances, I honestly believe that these things could have been prevented if we were a little more cautious in how we voted. I do realize that there are some unforeseen cases where a seemingly perfect candidate is caught in the wrong, but for the most part, I feel that prevention is possible.
Lesson learned: Examine all political candidates closely in all areas before voting.
1 Please note that I’m not insinuating that Barack Obama’s an idiot, but he’s the ideal target when I'm on the subject of political rhetoric.
